    Foxcatcher-Teen Movie Review

They are brothers, best friends and Olympic gold medal wrestlers. Since childhood Dave (Mark Ruffalo) and Mark (Channing Tatum) Schultz have wrestled; they work hard, train together and make each other better. Their lives drastically change the day Mark receives a phone call from millionaire John du Pont (Steve Carell). John has a vision to create a world-class wrestling facility at his estate in Pennsylvania…Foxcatcher Farm. John wants the best, so of course he pursues Mark and Dave Schultz. Dave has a wife and kids and doesn’t want to move, however Mark takes a leap of faith and leaves his older brother’s side for the first time ever. He goes to Foxcatcher, feeling excited and hopeful. Initially things are great, Mark wins a world championship, and John and Mark become the best of friends. However after a few trying times Mark gets to know the real John du Pont…the schizophrenic millionaire who not only changes Mark’s life, but ruins it forever.

    Talking Points:

    • The film highlights the importance of family. When Mark is depressed and down, Dave (his older brother) is there for him, protecting Mark from John du Pont’s psychotic ways.
    • The film is slow moving and very dark. There’s a lot of dialogue, it’s not an action packed sports drama.

    Sexual Content: Mild

    • We see a male character’s naked backside.

    Violent/Disturbing Content: Excessive

    • We see a lot of violent wrestling moves; men are thrown around and pinned down.
    • After a wrestler loses a match he hits himself in the face and proceeds to smash his head into a mirror.
    • {Spoiler Alert} John du Pont (Steve Carell) is an odd and creepy character. He’s obsessed with guns, and shoots and kills a main character.

    Crude or Profane Language: Mild

    • “Sh-t” is said a couple of times in the film.

    Drug and Alcohol Content: Excessive

    • We see character’s drinking alcohol throughout the film.
    • John snorts cocaine and insists that Mark tries it. Mark ends up liking the drug and we often see him snorting cocaine.

    Will Kids Like It? No

    • As I previously mentioned, it’s a slow moving film with a lot of dialogue and not much action.

Overall this is an intense drama. Parents need to be aware of the excessive and disturbing violence throughout the film.
