My Story
Long before I was a mom, I was a movie lover. RomCom, drama, Sci-Fi, even documentaries – I’m a sucker for a great story and a gorgeous leading actor. Movies were my ultimate escape, a welcome distraction from my busy life. Not to mention the best excuse to eat buttery popcorn scattered with peanut M&Ms.
Even now, whether it’s date night or a family outing with my three kids, I always choose the movies. I love nothing more than getting lost for a couple of hours. Over the years, films have brought my family together, sparked creative debate, even changed my mind – and I’m pretty darn opinionated. (Which makes me a stellar critic.) Yet the older my family gets, the more sensitive I’ve become to the mature content in today’s movies. Sure, I want my kids to be entertained yet I don’t want them to be exposed to too much too soon – and the MPAA ratings don’t always tell the straight scoop. Today’s PG-13 was my generation’s R. Now don’t get me wrong: I’m not one of those Moms that needs to shelter her kids; I just want to be responsibly prepared, so I can give them a real-world look at life when we’re both ready.
Which brings me to Box Office Mom: I’ve made it my business to give my fellow parents an insider’s look at movies. Not just the steak but the sizzle – profanity, violence, sensuality, drugs – that contribute to a film’s MPAA rating, along with a point-of-view on the quality of the story, acting, direction, you name it. My goal is to guide you towards making an informed decision for your family before you go to the theater. So you can then sit back, relax and enjoy the movie. Oh, and the popcorn, of course.
