The Amazing Spider-Man 2- Kids’ Movie Review

The graduation march “Pomp and Circumstance ” was playing as Valedictorian Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and her boyfriend Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) receive their high school diplomas. Now they have to face the real world. Being the good and moral guy he is, Peter tells Gwen that he can’t see her anymore. Though he’s madly in love with her, he had promised her dying father that he would stay away from Gwen, due to his dangerous double life as Spider-Man. Now Peter must try to move on and face his role of saving lives as a superhero. However, things get very complicated as a mysterious company threatens the lives of New Yorkers. With the emergence of their super-villain Electro (Jamie Foxx) and other villains, Spider-Man realizes he has a difficult  job ahead of him, especially when he discovers that his ex-girlfriend and true love, Gwen, works for the company. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is an entertaining action packed film, and a sequel to the 2012 Spider-Man film.

    Talking Points:

Spider-Man is a great super-hero and role model for kids. He truly cares for others and wants to protect everyone. He appreciates and loves his family and friends. He’s also a fun-loving humorous teenage boy!

There’s a continued message to push through hard times and have hope. In Gwen’s graduation speech she says, “No matter how lost you feel, you must promise me to hold on to hope.” This was a recorded speech and played in the end when Spider-Man  goes through difficult times.

Parents need to be aware that the subject of death for loved ones is portrayed in the film.

There is quite a bit of violence, which may scare kids some kids. See details below.

    Sexual Content: Mild

    • Peter and Gwen passionately kiss several times.

    Violent Content: Excessive

    • Peter’s parents are attacked while in an airplane. In the plane, characters are brutally punched and beaten, shot, and blown out of a broken window.
    • Electro is set free in New York City. He electrocutes innocent civilians, tearing down buildings, causing explosions and complete mayhem.
    • Peter and Gwen are also involved in violent battles with Electro.
    • We see a character on his deathbed suffering from a rare disease. With his facing peeling and looking very sickly.

    Crude or Profane Language: Mild

    • We hear “d–n,” and “h—.”

    Drugs and Alcohol: Mild

    • We see a character drinking hard liquor, and it appears as though he’s had a little too much.

Will it Appeal to kids? Yes

    I interviewed three kids…

    • Emma (11) “Good, but scary.”
    • Chloe (9) “I won’t be able to sleep tonight.”
    • Dawson (7 1/2) ” I LOVED IT!!!”

Overall this is a fun entertaining movie! However,  parents need to be aware of the excessive violence throughout the film.
