    Monster’s University-Kids Movie Review

Kids typically have dreams of what they want to be when they grow up, or have a dream college they want to attend. Monster, Michael “Mike” Wazowski, dreams of being a scarer, a monster who  is able to make kids scream. Mike eventually attends the Scare Program at Monster’s University, and that’s where he meets James “Sulley” P. Sullivan. The two monster’s have different strengths and weaknesses. Mike is an ambitious hard working monster, though not very scary, and Sulley is a natural scarer (he comes from a family of talented scarers), however he doesn’t have the best work ethic.Together the two monsters face various trials and tribulations, but they learn to work together and use their talents to succeed. Monster’s University is the prequel to the 2001 film Monster’s Inc. It’s a wonderful animated film, one for the whole family!

Jacka** Presents: Bad Grandpa- Teen Movie Review

Traveling across America with an 86 year-old man may sound boring to some, however for Billy (Jackson Nicoll), it was anything but boring. This is the story about Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and his 8 year-old grandson, Billy. The two journey across country to Raleigh, North Carolina, where Billy reunites with his estranged father. They encounter many unusual situations from male strip clubs to biker bars; situations in which most 8 year-olds would not be involved. Bad Grandpa is an R rated comedy, which is not appropriate for kids, though older teens may find it entertaining.

Bad GrandpaRating: 2 out of 5 buckets
    Release Date: January 28, 2014
    MPAA Rating: R
    Best Age Group: 17+
    Sexual Content: Excessive
    Violent Content: Mild
    Crude or Profane Language: Excessive
    Drugs and Alcohol: Excessive
Will It Appeal to Teens? Yes

    Talking Points:

Grandpa and Billy bond on their drive together, which was sweet and endearing.

There was a hidden camera on their road trip. That made the film a little more interesting and entertaining, especially seeing peoples reactions to Grandpa’s goofy ways.

The humor in the film was disgusting and gross. For example; Grandpa and Billy were having a farting contest in a restaurant, and grandpa defecated on the wall. There was crude humor throughout the film.

    Sexual Content: Excessive

    •  Grandpa flirted and made sexual comments to women.  Billy made some remarks as well.
    • Billy dressed up as a girl to enter in a kids’ beauty pageant. When he was on stage, he stripped down to his bra and undies and proceeded to do a pole dance routine. That was very strange!
    • Grandpa went to a male strip club, we saw  male strippers and female customers miming sexual movements.
    • Grandpa decided to participate at the strip club. He took off his pants, though he was wearing his underwear, we saw his privates hanging out.

    Violent Content: Mild

    •  Grandpa drives recklessly; he continually hits signs and public property with his car.

    Crude or Profane Language: Excessive

    • The f-word is said numerous times. We also hear; “a–,” “b–ch,” “sh-t,” and “h–l.”

    Drugs and Alcohol: Excessive

    • We see characters drinking beer and hard liquor. Billy even drinks beer, initially spits it out, but then ends up liking it.
    • Characters are shown smoking cigarettes.

Will It Appeal to Teens? Yes

    • There were a lot of seventeen year-olds in the theater, laughing throughout the film.

Overall Bad Grandpa is an inappropriate R rated film, one I don’t recommend for kids or pre-teens. As I previously mentioned, older teens may find it entertaining.  Parents need to be aware of the excessive sexual comments and vulgar behavior woven through the film.

Don Jon (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a good Catholic boy from New Jersey; he attends Mass every Sunday, he’s a dedicated son who has dinner with his parents and sister once a week, and he’s a good, loyal friend.  However there’s one problem..he’s addicted to porn! Even when he’s involved with a  girlfriend, he’s only satisfied by porn. Though things change for Jon when he meets Esther (Julianne Moore), a woman with whom he discovers friendship, happiness and true love!

    MPAA Rating: R
    Best Age Group: Adults
    Sexual Content: Excessive
    Violent Content: Mild
    Crude or Profane Language: Excessive
    Drugs and Alcohol: Moderate
    Will It Appeal to Teens?
    No

    Talking Points:

Believe it or not this R-rated (borderline NC-17)  movie filled with sexual and inappropriate scenes has some redeeming qualities.  Jon was addicted to porn, even when he had a girlfriend. However he eventually came to realize that sexual satisfaction doesn’t come from porn on the computer or a hot girl from the bar, it comes from your soul mate and a solid, loving relationship!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, known as the cute boy from the film 500 Days of Summer , is a reason why pre-teen girls may want to see this film. Though it has a good message, it won’t spark a good parent/child conversation, because kids will not want to see this with their parents; there’s way too many inappropriate sexual scenes.

    Sexual Content: Excessive

    •  Woman are shown topless and in various sexual positions. Pornography is highlighted throughout the film.
    • There are sexual discussions regarding porn, masturbation, sexual positions and oral sex.
    • As  Jon is watching porn, it’s implied that he’s masturbating; when finished we see him throw a tissue in the trash.

    Violent Content: Mild

    •  Jon punches a car window, we see his bloody hand.

    Crude or Profane Language: Excessive

    • The f-word is said numerous times throughout the film. We also hear “sh-t,” “a–,” ‘b–ch,””b–tard,” “h–l,” “p—y” and “t-t.”

    Drugs and Alcohol: Moderate

    • We see characters smoking marijuana.
    • Character’s are shown drinking beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages.

Will It Appeal to Teens? No

Overall this is a very sexual oriented film, one I don’t recommend for pre-teens or teenagers.
