Incredible Burt Wonderstone – Teen Movie Review

    Teenager’s Movie Review!

Abracadabra played loudly throughout the Las Vegas theater as superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton’s (Steve Buscemi) performances began. These magicians were amazing, they ruled the Las Vegas strip..they had it all. However after twenty years, things got old and mundane; ticket sales were down, the two best friends weren’t getting along, and a new magician, Steve Gray (Jim Carrey) came to town. Now Burt and Anton had to find a way to overcome their struggles, survive the competition, and regain their love for magic.

    Talking Points:

Through all the silly and goofy scenes, there were some heart warming moments as well. Burt and Anton were life long friends. They didn’t always get along, however they eventually came to realize how much they needed each others’ friendship.

Initially Burt was very self centered and arrogant, though he was quickly humbled when things weren’t going well; his business partner and best friend left him, he lost his job, and he was alone. Burt became a more compassionate and caring person, and discovered what was truly important in life.

Steve Gray’s (Jim Carrey) magical performances were very disturbing and weird, he purposely injured himself during his stunts. (See details in violent content).

     Sexual: Moderate

Burt had many sexual encounters, he assumed that when he met a woman, she’d sleep with him.

In one scene Burt picked a woman from the audience, after the show he took her to his bedroom and seduced her. Later, she was shown only wearing her bra and panties.

Burt and his assistant, Jane, had a sexually encounter. In bed he magically removed her bra, and she magically pulled a condom out of his ear.

There were sexual references and jokes throughout the film.

    Violent/Disturbing Content:

    • Steve cut his face with a razor blade, then sewed it back up.
    • Steve laid down on red hot burning coals.
    • At a children’s birthday party Steve put his arm over an open flame and burned a “happy birthday” message on his arm.
    • Steve pound a nail into a table with his head.
    • Steve drilled into his head with a power drilll; another strange Steve scene.

     Crude or Profane Language: Moderate

The “f-word was said once. We heard, “sh-t,” “h—,” “b–ch,” “d-mn,” and “b–tard,” throughout the film.

     Drug and Alcohol Content: Moderate

We saw character’s drinking in a bar.

Burt was shown drunk, while lying naked in the bathtub.

Anton discovered a toxic leaf when he was in Cambodia. He and Burt end up experimenting with the substance, and using it on their audience during several performances.

    Will Kids Like It? Yes

Overall The Incredible Burt Wonderstone was a silly and goofy movie, though entertaining in parts. Parents need to be aware of the sexual references and disturbing violent scenes.
