Parental Guidance-Kids Movie Review
Artie (Billy Crystal) and Diane (Bette Midler) are a pair of old-school grandparents who agreed to babysit their three grandchildren, while the kids’ parents were out of town. However, they didn’t realize what they’d be getting themselves into. With the grandparents’ traditional ways, and the kids’ (and their parents) modern day ways, this made for an interesting few days. Parental Guidance is an entertaining movie which shows the importance of family and the generational difference that comes along with it.

Talking Points:
This is a great family movie for all ages; from the grandparents on down. It was interesting to see the different parenting dynamics. Alice and Phil (the parents) had several restrictions-no sugar, no MSG, no diary, no gluten…etc. Then when the grandparents took over, they had a more relaxed approach, which most often resulted in chaos. However, Alice eventually realized that her parents’ had a positive effect on the kids.
I loved this movie, and the central theme of love and the value of family woven throughout the film, however there were some things I didn’t particularity like, and that parents need to be aware of. For example Grandpa repeatedly paid Barker (the youngest son) cash to get him to obey him. Barker urinated on a skateboarding half pipe, which caused Tony Hawk (the legendary skateboarder) to wipe out. Barker continuously called Grandpa “Fartie.”
Sexual Content: Mild
- It’s implied that Phil and Alice’s (the parents) getaway will be a romantic one.
- Grandma picks out a cocktail dress for Harper’s (the 12 year old granddaughter) violin concert. Grandma also encourages Harper to wear make-up when going to a party at a boy’s house.
Violent Content: Mild
- Grandpa advices Turner (the middle child) on how to handle a bully. Turner listens to his grandpa, though both boys end up with a black eye.
- Grandpa gets hit in the crotch by the bully; the pain causes grandpa to vomit on the boy.
Crude or Profane Language: Moderate
- Name calling; such as “stupid.”
- When Grandpa tells Barker (the youngest child) to call him “Artie” instead of “Grandpa,”, Barker decides to call him “Fartie” instead of “Artie.”
Drugs and Alcohol Content: Mild
- Character’s are shown drinking beer and wine.
Will Kids Like It? Yes
Overall this was a fun, entertaining movie! Depending on the child, I recommend this for kids ages 7 and up; however parents need to be aware of the potty humor portrayed throughout the film.
