The Family- Teen Movie Review

A family whose last name changes periodically, a family who is constantly on the run.That’s what happens when you’re a mafia boss and in the Witness Protection Program. This is the story about Giovanni Manzoni (Robert De Niro), his wife Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer) and their two teenage children. Ever since Giovanni snitched on the mob, their family life became chaotic; they were constantly on the run just trying to stay alive. Finally they relocated to Normandy, France where they were hoping for some peace and stability. However things didn’t go as planned, and the quiet life they were hoping for got crazier than ever. The Family is and R rated dramatic comedy, one that may appeal to older teenagers and adults.

Talking Points:

There is an all-star cast, to name a few: Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer,  Dianna Agron (from Glee) and Tommy Lee Jones. The film may appeal to teens because of Dianna Agron.

A 17 year old girl falls in love with a college-aged man, whom she loses her virginity to.  To him it was just a “moment,”  nothing special, however to her it was very special; she said,” I gave him her heart and soul.” Great parent/child conversations.

The Family doesn’t have any wonderful heartfelt messages or themes, however with the great actors and entertaining storyline, it may appeal to teenagers.

Sexual Content: Mild

• We see a 17 year old girl and a college-age boy having sex in a classroom;  against the wall. It’s a brief scene and they are fully clothed.
• Four high school boys flirt with a teenage girl, they take her for a ride to get to know her better. When one of the boys touches her bra strap, she hits him with a tennis racket, takes his car, and drives away.
• A mafia thug wanted to rape Giovanni’s wife before killing her. As he was pulling down his pants, he was shot to death.

Violent Content: Excessive

• Characters were shot and killed, beaten to death by baseball bats, tennis rackets and other tools. Characters were shown covered in blood.
• A character blows up a grocery store.
• We see a high school student getting bullied and beaten up in the school bathroom.
• A mafia thug wanted to rape Maggie before killing her. As he was pulling down his pants, he was shot to death.

Crude or Profane Language: Excessive

• The f-word was said numerous times throughout the film. We also heard “a–,” “b–ch,” “b-tard,” “h–” and “p—.”

Drugs and Alcohol Content: Mild

• Characters were shown smoking cigarettes.
• We saw characters drinking wine, beer and hard liquor.

Will it Appeal to Teens: Yes

The Family is an R rated movie which means that kids under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult. The film is entertaining, however parents need to be aware of the excessive profane language and violent content throughout the film.
