The Hobbit: An Expected Journey Review
He missed his armchair, he missed his books, and he missed his home. That’s how Bilbo Baggins (the hobbit) felt when he expectantly left his home to help thirteen dwarves reclaim their Dwarf Kingdom; which had been attacked by the dragon Smaug. It all started one day when Bilbo was approached by a wizard named Gandalf. Gandalf invited Bilbo on an adventure; one where he would have to leave the comforts of his home, but one that would change his life forever. Bilbo’s humble and kind hearted spirit was the reason why Gandalf chose a hobbit to help conquer their difficult quest. The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey is and action/adventure drama; the first of three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel, The Hobbit.

Talking Points:
Messages of loyalty, friendship and sacrifice are woven throughout the film. While the hobbit was very reluctant to help the dwarves reclaim their kingdom, he knew the importance and comfort of having a home; he wanted that for his friends. This will spark some great parent/child conversations.
Gandalf explained his rationale for choosing Bilbo (the hobbit) to help the dwarves. He said that one wizard believed it is great power that will keep evil away, while Gandalf said, “It is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk, that keeps the darkness at at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love.” Another great conversation with your kids.
I loved the characters; from the humble, sweet hobbit to the confident wizard, Gandalf, you felt their sense of loyalty and friendship with one another.
Amongst all the drama and action there are some humorous parts. Like Gandolf said, “All good stories deserve embellishment.” A quote I particularly liked.
The film is 170 minutes, which may be a little too long for some kids.

- In the beginning of the film we see the dragon Smaug, raid and destroy the dwarves land.
- We see another battle between the dwarves and their enemies. This is an intense scene as we see a battlefield filled with deceased victims.
- We see two stone giants fighting and throwing boulders.
- Character’s fight, they are slashed, burned and decapitated.
- Trolls capture Bilbo and his friends,and threatened to eat them.
- There are fights with goblins and trolls, these creatures may scare young kids.
- A goblin beats and kills another goblin, he also threatened to eat Bilbo if he lost a game of riddles.

- Character’s drink beer and wine.
- We see character’s smoking a pipe, while blowing smoke rings.
- Character’s discuss the drug, mushrooms, and the crazy effect it has on people.
Will Kids Like It? Yes
Overall this is a wonderful action/adventure drama. Depending on the child, I feel this is appropriate for kids ages twelve and up. Parents need to be aware of the intense, violent scenes throughout the film.
