    The Boxtrolls-Kids Movie Review

In an underground world lives a group of subterranean trolls who adopted an infant orphan boy named Eggs (voice of Isaac Hempstead Wright).  These trolls look fearsome in their card board box attire, however they are very kind-hearted loving creatures. Things get difficult for the trolls as the evil exterminator,  Snatcher (voice of Ben Kingsley) wants to eliminate all them, with hopes to to become a high society man.  However it’s not that easy for Snatcher. Eggs and his wealthy friend from above, Winnie (Elle Fanning), will do anything to try and save the loving creatures underground. Based on the children’s novel ‘Here Be Monsters’ by Alan Snow, The Boxtrolls is a dark, animated film that will most likely scare young kids.

    Talking Points:

Though this is a dark and disturbing film for kids, I did find some redeeming qualities. The importance of a loving father is highlighted as Fish protects and nurtures his adopted orphan son, Egg. The Boxtrolls are kind-hearted creatures who love children.

Egg eventually stands up to Snatcher, saying,  “Cheese, hats, boxes they don’t make you who you are. You make you.”

This is an animated film geared towards children. However with the dark and creepy storyline, kids will most likely be frightened by the fact that characters are kidnapped and tortured. See details in violent content below.

    Sexual Content: Moderate

    • Madame Frou Frou has a seductive, manly voice. Her  lyrics are sometimes inappropriate as well.
    • When it’s revealed that Madame Frou Frou is also Archibald Snatcher, a character blurts out…”Oh my God, I regret so
    • much.”

    Violent Content: Excessive

    • Snatcher is a dark, evil villain, who enjoys inflicting pain on others. He desperately wants to kill the Boxtrolls and eventually kidnaps several of them. He even invades the Boxtrolls’ underground home by using a huge robot.
    • Snatcher uses a crushing press to execute all the creatures he’s captured.
    • We see Snatcher’s allergic reaction to cheese, his face swells and looks disgusting.

    Crude or Profane Language: None

    Drugs and Alcohol: None

Will it Appeal to kids? No

Overall this is a dark and disturbing animated film, one I don’t recommend for kids. See Dolphin Tale 2 or Rio 2 instead!

“There’s No Place Like Home, There’s No Place Like Home…,” the very familiar quote from The Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy as she was trying to leave Oz and get back home to Kansas. As Dorothy tries to save her old friends she meets new ones along the way; an owl, a marshmallow magistrate, a china doll princess and a tugboat. Together the gang must not only save Dorothy’s friends, but restore happiness back to the wonderful Land of Oz.

    Rio 2-Kids Movie Reviews

“Happy wife, happy life,” a well known phrase and a motto that Blu (voice of Jesse Eisenberg) tries to live by. In this sequel to the 2011 film Rio, the beloved birds Blu, Jewel and their three kids leave the city of Rio de Janeiro and journey to the Amazon rainforest. On there way they come across many adventures as they run into Blu and Jewel’s former nemesis, Nigel the cockatoo; who wants to seek revenge on the Macaws. Things get even more complicated upon their arrival when they see Jewel’s father. Now Blu not only has to deal with vengeful Nigel, but even worse he must try to fit in with his father-in-law…which isn’t easy. Rio 2 is a fun adventurous animated movie for kids of all ages.

Mr. Peabody And Sherman- Kids Movie Review

“Every dog should have a boy,” that’s what Mr. Peabody (voice of Ty Burrell) says about his mischievous son Sherman (voice of Max Charles). Mr. Peabody is an extremely intelligent talking dog who has adopted a boy named Sherman. The two live in a New York City penthouse: Sherman goes to school like most 7 year old boys, and Mr. Peabody is a loving dedicated father who takes care of the house and brings home the bacon. Peabody and Sherman also like to have fun! Continue reading

    THE LEGO® MOVIE-Kids Movie Review

“He was so good at fitting in, nobody noticed him.” THE LEGO® MOVIE follows the life of a Lego named Emmet Brickowski (voice of Chris Pratt). Emmet is an average guy, who works at an average construction company, building average skyscrapers. He’s also a fun-loving, upbeat guy. He even has a favorite song called, “Everything Is Awesome,” which sums up his attitude on life. Things drastically  change for Emmet the day he meets his beautiful co-worker, Wyldstyle (voice of Elizabeth Banks). Wyldstyle mistakes Emmet for “the most important person in the universe” (a.k.a. the Special), and recruits him on an adventurous journey to stop an evil Lego from gluing the universe together. Now Emmet takes his average life to a whole new level…which isn’t so average.  THE LEGO® MOVIE is a wonderful and very clever animated film for the whole family.

The Lego Movie Rating: 4 out of 5 buckets
    Release Date: June 17, 2014
    MPAA Rating: PG
    Best Age Group: 7+
    Sexual Content: None
    Violent Content: Excessive
    Crude or Profane Language: None
    Drugs and Alcohol: None
Will it Appeal to Kids? Yes

    Talking Points:

“Embrace what is special about you,” and “to be special you need to believe,” are quotes and themes used in the film.  Once Emmet discovers that people think he’s “Special,” he believes in himself and has more confidence.

This is a great PG movie, however it has some intense scenes between the the good Legos and villain Legos. I interviewed a five year old boy who loved the movie, but was scared in parts.

The film is an hour and forty-one minutes, which may be a little long for young kids. Having said that, pre-teens and teens that once played with Legos will love the film, and adults will enjoy it too.

    Sexual Content: None

    Violent Content: Excessive

    • There are fist fights, gunfights, explosions and car crashes throughout the whole movie.  The action is similar to a live action film, however this action is animated by a bunch of plastic blocks….LEGOS®.

    Crude or Profane Language: None

    Drugs and Alcohol: None

Will it Appeal to Kids? Yes

Overall THE LEGO® MOVIE is an entertaining film for all. Parents will enjoy the adult humor and kids will enjoy the adventurous Legos. Parents need to be aware of the excessive violence throughout the film. Depending on the child, I recommend this film for kids ages 7 and up.
